Section Officer, Grade VI interview practice

You get a question. You answer out loud, up to three minutes. The board’s review comes back in about ten seconds.

Before the Professional Knowledge questions, have these ready for your own post

The health region and Integrated Healthcare Area the post sits in, and who leads them. The service’s budget and its two or three live KPIs from the regional service plan. The HR policies you would use most (Dignity at Work, Managing Attendance, Grievance and Disciplinary, Trust in Care). The parts of the National Financial Regulations a budget holder meets: purchase orders, quotes and tender thresholds, approval limits. The complaints route under Your Service Your Say with its time limits. One thing the service is facing this year, from its own published plan.

Knowledge questions here come with the points a board’s ideal answer contains, shown after the review with full access. The marker checks coverage, accuracy and whether you tied each point to the post; it cannot verify your service’s own figures and will tell you to check them.

Ready for the whole hour? The mock board asks one question per area with nothing back until the end, then fills in the scorecard.

HSE boards mark the headings printed in your own job specification under “Skills, competencies and/or knowledge”. At Grade VI the board of three has about 40 minutes: an opening block on your career, then four of the areas questioned directly, with Communications & Interpersonal Skills marked from everything you say. The headings here are the 2026 Dublin & North East Section Officer wording; if your spec words one differently, prepare for that wording. Under 40 in any heading and you are not placed on the panel; panels for one or two posts are usually filled from candidates who scored 70 and above, so the Good band is the target, not the line.

The Section Officer, Grade VI interview in 2026

HSE Grade VI Section Officer posts are recruited through Rezoomo by the health regions, usually one section at a time or as a regional panel. Candidates are shortlisted on the application form against the eligibility criteria and the "Skills, competencies and/or knowledge" section of the job specification, then called to a competency-based interview. Where the campaign uses Equitas the interview is recorded and transcribed and you may request the transcript.

The board is three people: an internal expert, an external expert and an independent chair, one of them taking notes. The interview runs about 40 to 45 minutes. The chair opens with a brief overview of your education and career, then says who will cover which competency. Four of the six headings are questioned directly, usually with one example each and a follow-up on how you did it, why, what others thought, what you would do differently and how it applies to this post. Communications and interpersonal skills are marked from the whole interview, not from one question. Professional Knowledge questions are written in advance with an ideal expected answer and marked against it.

The step up from Grade V is accountability for a section, not supervision of a team: structuring other people’s workload across several pieces of work, knowing what to refer upward and putting options to the manager, running a process end to end within the rules, holding staff to a standard. Boards hear the difference in the first minute of an example.

What the board marks

The headings under "Skills, competencies and/or knowledge" in the job specification, each marked separately:

  • Professional Knowledge & Experience
  • Planning & Managing Resources
  • Evaluating Information, Problem Solving & Decision Making
  • Team Working
  • Commitment to a Quality Service
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills

Each heading is marked 1 to 100 and you need at least 40 in every one to be placed on the panel. The board’s own guidelines describe the bands as 1 to 39 Not Acceptable (patchy, little or no evidence), 40 to 69 Acceptable (a sufficiently high standard to work at the level; where most candidates score), 70 to 89 Good (an area of distinctive strength) and 90 to 100 Exceptional. The applicant documents print the same bands as Little, Adequate, Good and Strong evidence. Each member marks independently straight after the interview, then they agree a mark and a one-line comment per heading in the form "displayed good evidence of the ability to plan and organise in the example where...". You receive those comments with your result. Panels for one or two posts are filled from the top, so 70 and above is the realistic target.

  8. Talk me through your education and training to date and how you have applied it. Professional Knowledge & Experience

Pick any of them above, answer out loud, and the review shows which indicators you evidenced, quoting your words back. How the marking works.

Questions people ask about the Section Officer, Grade VI interview

How many marks do I need to pass an HSE Grade VI interview?

At least 40 out of 100 in every heading. Under 40 in one heading and you are not placed on the panel, whatever your total. Being placed is not the same as being reached: for a single post the panel is worked in order of merit, so candidates in the 70 to 89 band are the ones who get the call. Ties are broken on a predetermined heading, usually Professional Knowledge.

What is in the Professional Knowledge block?

The Section Officer specification names the HSE structures (IHAs and the reform), HSE HR policies and procedures, the National Financial Regulations, the Data Protection and FOI Acts, risk assessment, and HR processes such as recruitment, personnel administration and employment control. Boards write these questions in advance with an ideal answer. Know your region and IHA, the HR policies by name and what each asks of a manager, and the procurement and approval rules a section meets.

How long should an answer be?

About three minutes for an example, then the follow-ups. Candidates on r/IrishCivilService report boards at this level naming the competency before each question and asking for two or three examples per competency, so have a second example ready for every heading. The HSE’s own advice is to make life easy for the board: set the scene in two sentences, then what you did and why, the result, what you learned.

Is there a presentation?

Not for a standard administrative Grade VI or VII post. The specification lists "strong presentation skills" as an indicator under Communications, but published specs and candidate reports show a structured competency interview only. Specialist posts (quality, programme management, Tusla) sometimes add one; your invitation letter will say.

Can I ask for feedback or a transcript?

Yes. You can request your marks and the board’s comments, and where Equitas is used, the transcript. The marking sheet carries a one-line comment per heading in the board’s template; the review here shows you the equivalent comment for each answer so you see it before the board writes it.

Practice questions are written from the published job specifications and from what candidates report about 2025 and 2026 boards. They are not the board’s question list; no such list is published.
